New Rules of Criminal Discovery

The Virginia Supreme Court adopted some significant new rules of criminal discovery, effective July 1, 2020.  The new criminal discovery rules include some long-overdue reforms.  The highlights of the new rules are as follows:

  • Prosecutors can now be required to provide the names of prosecution witnesses to the Defense,  

 

Virginia Governor's Unconstitutional Criminalization of Religious Gatherings

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam criminalized religious gatherings of more than 10 people in his Executive Order # __ in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The Governor's temporary prohibition of gatherings of more than 10 people did not exempt persons engaged in religious worship or other religious activities, but did exempt liquor stores, laundromats, and lawyers, among
